Auswitch Birkenau

As Our group walked through the gates of Auswitch (I), It was quite disturbing how beautiful the place was. It was difficult to imaging how such a place held the memory of horror and death for thousands.

However walking inside one of the old barracks shows a different side, rooms of death and torture abounded, a room with over 2 tons of human hair, taken from the heads of women and children on the way to their death, to be used in German textiles.

Piles of shoes (20,000) , suitcases and other personal belongings the only physical remains of those who passed through this horrible place, and this was supposed to be the better of the 3 camps.

Next we were taken a few kilometers up the road to Birkenau, where an estimated 1,500 000 Jews were executed in the gas chambers.

The railway was even extended to run through the gates, so that it could run right up to the doors of the gas chamber, a terribly efficient production line of death
There was a cold eerie wind blowing through the camp, the thermometer was -5' and it was not even winter yet!

As I was leaving the camp, someone had speared a rose on a barb.

This is not a place I am likely to forget in a hurry
